Living in a one bedroom apartment where was no privacy and you were always surrounded by people, I had to find different ways toe scape such madness, even my own madness sometimes. I took up drawing and fell in love with different forms of music that would help stop crying when I started to lose control of reality. But, also living in such a small place, I was also aware of the struggles that my mom had to endure in raising five children on her own while being an immigrant in this country. Every time I had to write who was my hero in classes, I would write about her and how I was so astounded on how strong she was. My admiration for her drove me to work harder and become passionate about women and Latino rights.
My name is Kelly Rendon, I am a sister, aunt, daughter, cousin and a god mother and my dream is to become a forensic psychologist. Something I am really passionate about is drawing. I start to get lost in the moment as soon as the pencil hits the paper. As I just concentrate on the shape of an image, there are no worries, nor any fears that can consume a person and cause them to have a battle between reality and depression, and forget about why I was stressing out. Thinking about what makes me different from others is rather difficult to come up with a response to this question. I guess the most obvious is my hair and how untame it can get. However, the journey that it took to get it this stage was tedious since there was this pressure in society that straight hair was what made a girl more beautiful and a person with curly hair meant that they did not take care of themselves. I take everything negative from society and try to form it into something positive through the expression of art. |
