Imagine this, you send sexual or intimate images to your partner and then a couple of weeks to months later you break up with the person. They were upset with you and started to distribute your images to friends and for revenge. Without your consent he posted it online and of course it’s going viral. From social media to social media people are responding to the image. People are calling you a whore, slut, cunt, etc and others are trying to defend you. This is what revenge porn is and many are doing this act and getting are away with it. There are not enough laws against this act and there are limitations when it seems like someone did it to get back at you. Many women's lives and reputation were diminished because of it.
The biggest issue we are having in society today is defining sexual violence/harassment online. When we are being bullied or trolled online we are often told to ignore them, block them, go offline or to not share personal information and that’s reinforcing negative behavior/communication with one another. Men are often seen as the hero and the bigger person when they commit a crime against a woman and we can’t keep defending them. We have to fight. In chapter six, “Rape Threats and Revenge Porn: Defining Sexual Violence in the Digital Age” by Jordan Fairbairn, discusses how digital communication with technology has transformed over and minimized serious crimes such as rape threats and revenge porn. |
